Arnie Roth is Steve Roger’s childhood friend, he gave him company, kept him out of trouble and protected him from bullies (he pretty much covers Bucky’s role in the film with skinny! Steve), he was basically Steve’s big brother and best friend. They were so close that when Arnie sees Steve again he pretty much tells him that he knew that Steve was Captain America ever since the moment he first saw Cap in action on a newsreel (despite the fact that Steve never told him about it or even knew that Arnie knew).
Besides being Cap’s childhood BFF, Arnie was also gay (probably Marvel’s first gay character, Northstar was created before him but he wasn’t outed as being gay when this came out) and he happened to live with his partner Michael for 10 years when he and Steve meet post-Freezing. When Steve found out he was gay, he was ok with it and never had any problems with his friend’s sexual preference. He loved Arnie as his brother and nothing would change that.
As a matter in fact when Zemo captures Arnie, degrades him and makes him do a horrible speech referring to himself as being a “menace” and a “disease”. Steve makes a wonderful speech (pictured in one of the thumbnails) and tells Arnie that no matter what he’s being made to say that he knows Arnie is one of the best men Steve has ever known and that no one can corrupt his love for Michael. Steve then goes on to tell him that the real disease are the intolerant bigots who think negatively of him for who he is.
Really this is one of the reason I love Steve, he’s a man who respects everyone and doesn’t judge people based on their race, sex, gender, orientation, nationality, or religion (or lack thereof).
Steve loves Arnie no matter what and is willing to defend him and his love from anyone, he’s even there for Arnie on his deathbed.

I need help finding this fancy-as-hell beautiful cross Dave. I ran into him this weekend at fanime while I was in my jade dress. He jumped into my arms, stuck around for one blissful picture, then ran off and was gone from my life forever. Sob.
